When it comes to making decisions, there’s always a tendency to overthink things.

We get stuck in analysis paralysis, unable to move forward because we’re worried about the potential consequences of our choices.

We worry about what other people will think, or whether we’re making the right decision.

This is especially true when it comes to picking a good health insurance plan. There are so many options out there, and it can be hard to know which one is right for you.

Do you go for the cheapest option?

The most comprehensive?

The one that your friends have?

Thankfully, the Singapore government has made that decision any easier by implementing a mandatory health insurance scheme called Medishield Life.

The primary goal is to help alleviate the financial burden of healthcare costs. However, as with any insurance plan, there are both pros and cons.

In this article, we’ll take a closer look at Medishield Life to see if it is a sufficient health insurance plan for you.

What is Medishield Life and how does it work

What is Medishield Life?

Medishield Life is a mandatory basic health insurance plan administered by the Central Provident Fund (CPF) Board. It offers coverage for hospital and surgical expenses, as well as outpatient treatments.

How does it work?

The premiums are paid by Singaporeans through their CPF or cash so patients pay less for large hospital bills.

What are the benefits?

The main benefit of Medishield Life is that it helps to alleviate the financial burden of healthcare costs.

It subsidises treatment in public hospitals pegged to B2/C-type wards. You can still choose to stay in an A/B1-type ward or in a private hospital but the payout will only cover a small proportion of your bill.

You would need to draw from MediSave and/or cash to pay the balance.

What are the drawbacks?

There are some drawbacks to Medishield Life, such as the fact that it does not include dental or optical care.

There is a yearly maximum claim limit of S$150,000 and no lifetime limit.

The main benefit of Medishield Life is that it helps to alleviate the financial burden of healthcare costs. It is a basic plan, but it offers good coverage for hospitalisation stay expense as well as outpatient treatments.

This can be a huge relief for Singaporeans, who often have to pay high out-of-pocket costs for medical treatment.

Another pro is that Medishield Life has automatic coverage for Singapore citizens and PRs, which means that everyone is covered. This is beneficial because it ensures that everyone has some form of protection, regardless of their income level.

Finally, Medishield Life has a relatively low premium, which is paid by Singaporeans through their CPF.

The cons of Medishield Life

There are some drawbacks to Medishield Life, such as the fact that it does not include dental or optical care. This can be a problem for people who need regular dental or optical care, as they will have to pay for these expenses out of pocket.

Another drawback is it only has basic coverage so you can only use it for subsidised treatments in the public hospitals. Coverage for major surgeries is also very limited

(up to $2,600 only).

Finally, Medishield Life has a yearly maximum claim limit of S$150,000. This means that if your medical expenses exceed this amount, you will have to pay for the remainder yourself.

Final thoughts

Overall, Medishield Life is a good basic medical insurance plan that offers good coverage for hospital and surgical expenses, as well as outpatient treatments.

However, there are some drawbacks to the scheme, such as the fact that it does not include dental or optical care.

If you’re trying to decide whether Medishield Life is enough for you, consider your needs and make sure you understand the limitations of the scheme.
